An Intimate Vow Renewal at Rat’s Restaurant in Hamilton Township, New Jersey

Some celebrations are beautiful because of the details. Others are beautiful because of the people.

This 25th wedding anniversary vow renewal at Rat’s Restaurant was definitely the second.

Located within Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, Rat’s Restaurant feels like something out of a storybook. With its French countryside charm, stunning gardens, and picturesque views, it’s easy to understand why Philadelphia Magazine named it one of the most romantic restaurants in the area.

The couple chose the Pavilion Room and outdoor terrace for their celebration, creating the perfect setting to gather their favorite people and celebrate 25 years of marriage.

And honestly? It was one of those days that reminds me exactly why I love what I do.

Exploring Grounds For Sculpture Before the Ceremony

Before the vow renewal began, we spent time wandering through Grounds For Sculpture with their adult children and family.

If you’ve ever visited Grounds For Sculpture, you know how magical it feels. Every pathway leads to another beautiful garden, sculpture, or hidden corner that feels completely different from the last. It’s one of my favorite locations for portraits in New Jersey because there is inspiration everywhere you look.

The afternoon felt relaxed from the very beginning. We strolled through the grounds, stopped for photos, and took advantage of the beautiful landscapes surrounding us. There was so much laughter and conversation as everyone spent time together before the ceremony.

One of the most special parts of the day was simply watching this family interact. Nothing felt rushed. Everyone was genuinely happy to be together, and that joy carried throughout the entire celebration.

Cocktail Hour on the Terrace at Rat’s Restaurant

Before the ceremony, guests gathered on the terrace at Rat’s Restaurant for cocktail hour. One of the things that makes this venue so special is its incredible location within Grounds For Sculpture.

From the terrace, guests can enjoy views of the park’s famous Monet-inspired landscape, modeled after Claude Monet’s iconic garden paintings. Between the water, gardens, and surrounding sculptures, it feels like stepping into a work of art.

As family and friends mingled, shared drinks, and caught up with one another, there was an excitement in the air that only comes with a celebration like this. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be together, and it set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Meaningful Details, Familiar Faces, and a Toast to 25 Years

One thing I knew was important to the couple was documenting the people who have been part of their story over the years. We made time for family photos, a few special group portraits, and some photographs with members of their original wedding party from 25 years ago.

There’s something really special about seeing people who stood beside you on your wedding day still standing beside you decades later.

The toasts, conversations, and little moments throughout cocktail hour created such a joyful atmosphere leading into the ceremony. By the time everyone took their seats, you could already feel how meaningful the evening was going to be.

Celebrating Choosing Each Other

Once the ceremony began, I found myself drawn not only to the couple, but also to the people sitting behind them.

One of my favorite things about photographing intimate celebrations is watching the reactions of the people who know the couple best. As vows were exchanged, family members smiled through tears, exchanged knowing glances, and soaked in every moment. Watching their children witness this chapter of their parents’ story was especially moving.

The emotion continued throughout the evening as the couple shared heartfelt speeches reflecting on 25 years of marriage. They spoke honestly about life’s challenges, raising a family, and finding their way back to one another through every season of life.

What I loved most was how real it felt.

They weren’t celebrating a perfect marriage. They were celebrating a lasting one.

A marriage built on commitment, resilience, and choosing each other again and again.

As I looked around the room, it was clear how much their relationship had impacted the people they love most. This wasn’t just a celebration of a wedding day. It was a celebration of everything that came after it.
